To add to its 125th anniversary celebrations, Northern Trust partnered with JAI to enable 6th class students from St. Munchin’s Girls N.S., St. Munchin’s, CBS, Limerick and City Quay N.S., Dublin 2 to “Make Maths Matter” last term
Make Maths Matter is designed to stimulate an excitement in students about maths, targeting them at a young age (11/12 years) and presenting maths in an interactive, entertaining and very accessible manner by taking it out of the classroom and into the world of work.
“Students learned a different approach to maths and the events really helped them to see the value and presence of maths in their everyday lives – one of the most fundamental aims of the primary school curriculum – and that is no easy feat. The activities were brilliant and all the facilitators were great with the children – they helped revisit and consolidate maths learning. The element of group-work worked really well and encouraged involvement and inclusion for everyone. The level of facilitation by the Northern Trust volunteers made all the difference.”
Zoe Sanfey, 6th class teacher, St. Munchin’s C.B.S., Limerick
The finale of the project was a maths through sports camp where the students were involved in challenges such as skipping, basketball, penalty shootouts and bowling. The morning’s activties allowed students to use maths to work out averages, percentages and fractions as well as enjoying some friendly competition.
Thanks to all involved from Northern Trust in both Limerick and Dublin.
