Students from Drumgosset N.S. and Scoil Phadraig, Corduff, enjoyed working with Nigel Mc Givney, Kingspan, on the Junior Achievement ‘Our Universe’ programme this term. Through hands-on activities the students gained a better understanding of some of the core principles of science and the role science plays in industry in Ireland today. For instance, the students learned about the ‘prescription for living’ – the importance of exercise, diet and keeping the heart healthy. Nigel, who is trained in CPR, also gave a memorable demonstration on this life-saving technique, which served to make the link for the students between their classroom-based work in science and the exciting world of medical devices and the part they play in helping treat heart disease.

Ms. Clare O’Reilly, Class Teacher, Scoil Phadraig, Corduff told us: “It was a great experience for the students. I would highly recommend the initiative provided by Junior Achievement and Kingspan to all primary schools… Very enjoyable and educational.” To round off their work with Nigel, the students visited Kingspan and were treated to a real insight into the working world. In a fitting end to the programme, Nigel presented each student with a JA ‘Certificate of Achievement’ and congratulated them on their work on the ‘Our Universe’ programme and encouraged them to keep up their interest in science.
