99 students from seven schools in Fanad and Keerrykeel took part in the Marine Harvest ‘Working It Out Event’ in the Rosnakill Hall. Nine Marine Harvest volunteers guided the students around five different sporting activities and when the whistle blew, it was time to work out the scores. The students used percentages, averages, decimals and fraction to calculate their scores in a fun and practical use of maths.
Aoife McElwaine, Principal in Ballyheerin National School, said: “The Marine Harvest staff were so professional and quickly build up a rapport with the students. The whole day ran like clockwork. The added extra of the maths element brings this sport event to another level. Sincere thanks to Marine Harvest and JAI for providing this fantastic opportunity for our local students to get together.”
“This is our fourth year partnering with JAI, which enables our staff volunteers to deliver programmes in seven local Donegal national schools. As well as delivering classroom based programmes to the students our staff volunteers also participate in school to work initiatives, where the student visit our operations as well as the annual ‘Working It Out’ event in Rossnakill. The ‘Working It Out’event is always well attended by all the schools and encourages students to mix and engage in mathematical based activities through physical exercise.” Maurice Kelly, HR Manager, Marine Harvest.
Patricia Friel, Programme Coordinator in the Border Counties for JAI, commented that “The Marine Harvest ‘Working It Out’ encourages these young students to see that mental maths can be fun. I really want to thank all of the Marine Harvest volunteers for their hard work ensuring these students had a morning to remember. Junior Achievement is celebrating its 20th year in Ireland and its fourth year working with Marine Harvest.”
