One of the first virtual JA activities delivered in Cork was a series of WiSTEM2D (Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Design) workshops for 5th and 6th class students at Our Lady of Lourdes National School and St Luke’s Primary School.
12 STEM role models from three Johnson & Johnson sites in Cork worked with 117 students to explore the world of engineering and pharmacology. The volunteers were from Janssen Pharmaceutical Sciences in Little Island, Depuy Synthesis in Ringaskiddy and Janssen Sciences in Ringaskiddy.
The students engaged with their J&J volunteers through the classroom whiteboards while workshop materials were supplied to each class. Through the course of the morning the students learned about careers in STEM with each volunteer sharing their personal career journey. The students enthusiastically participated in each of the hands-on STEM activities with loads of questions, excitement and fun that left both students and volunteers eager to have another opportunity to participate in future workshops.
